Unknown to the US Navy, four "Foxtrot" diesel subs left on Oct.1,1962 bound for Cuba carrying a nuclear-tipped torpedo. The messages were sent in "burst radio transmissions between the subs and Soviet Navy command (which never received the messages). The US Navy had assumed they were on the way to the Barents Sea for exercises. Mr. Hathaway, NSA agent in West Berlin, asked if our Elint Operators could pick up the signals, capture and record the "burst transmission's and get a line to its direction to help pinpoint the their location. 78th ASA Elint operators directed by D Trick Chief Mike Storie picked up the weak frequency bouncing off the ozone layer, captured, recorded, decoded the signature, and a got direction for a number of days. This team had kept the secret for 60 years.
