The Wall - 1967 to 1975

20 FEBRUARY1967   The GDR passes the "Law on the Citizenship of the GDR", introducing a separate "GDR citizenship" instead of the joint German citizenship that has been in force up to now. 

13 AUGUST1967   On the sixth anniversary of the Wall’s construction, the GDR press justifies it as an action taken against "the most cunning of robbers".             

1 December 1967  The GDR changes the name of its currency from "Mark of the German Central Bank" to "Mark of the German Democratic Republic".   

11 JUNE1968   The GDR government makes passports and visas obligatory for all travel, including transit traffic, between West Germany and West Berlin, and introduces a tax equalisation levy for transport traffic.
